FRASES EN PASADO HIPOTÉTICO:

If they'd played better, they would have won the match.

If I hadn't taken a taxi, I would have got very wet.
I would have gone to university if I'd had more money.

A menudo (aunque no siempre) se utiliza el "Third Conditional" (tercer condicional) para expresar arrepentimiento por una situación o comportamiento pasados y el resultado imaginado si las cosas hubieran sido diferentes.

If I had worked harder, I would have got a promotion.
We could have been famous if we'd practiced more.

Se pueden utilizar "could have" y "might have" para expresar posibilidad y capacidad en relación con situaciones irreales del pasado.
I could have been... (capacidad)
I might have been... (posibilidad)

Third Conditional' se forma con if + 'Past Perfect', Would have + Participio Pasado:
If I'd worked harder, I would have passed the exam.

La cláusula principal y la cláusula condicional pueden cambiar de posición en la oración:

'Would' puede sustituirse por 'could' o 'might' para expresar capacidad o posibilidad:

We could have been millionaires if we had won the lottery.
